Create a report that pulls all files with the matching extension

Recommended Posts

Hi There,

I want to create a report that will pull a file based off the extension. For each computer in a site including size and total count of files of that extension on that machine. Now I looked through our Database and noticed that non of the machines files are being captured. Now that makes this a little harder.

My idea to maybe fix this is to have a script that runs and pulls that info to a set of hidden text EDFs on each machine. Then have the report pull from those?

The flaw with doing this is that the script would have to run on a fairly regular basis or could it be run as the report is being pulled? Is there another way I can do this?

Thank You.

A report is just a report, it doesn't do anything proactively. The logic of what you want to do doesn't make much sense if you consider that not all machines are going to be switched on at any one time. What would the reporting engine do when a machine is off? Stop the report and wait until the power on again, one by one until all machines have been visited?

The way to do this, more or less is this: Write a script that searches for the files you want to find and writes the output to a text file on the PC. It then needs to upload that file to the server. You then need another script that takes those files one by one and processes them and imports that data into a table you have created in the database. Finally you report on the contents of that table.

You could also add some logic so that the script doesn't run more often than X times per day/week/month and to purge data before reimporting.

Thanks Imurphy,

The way I currently have it set is with EDFs, a script runs once a day then adds the data pulled to EDFs on the computer.

The report then Grabs the data off the EDFs. This puts all the data into a single cell for excel but that can be fixed. I was hoping maybe instead of a script their might be a way to add it to the standard inventory schedules.
