SurfLog Browser History Plugin

Recommended Posts

Geeks,

We are now on version 1.1.2

view1.jpg

Squidworks has another plugin in the works, Surflog is a browser history plugin that captures the browser history of all users on a windows system and imports that data into LabTech. It looks at Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox and collects the data for all users profiles. You can then view the data in the computer console of Labtech for the last 30 days . We provide a great stats page at both the client and computer levels to see how the browsers and time on the internet is being used.

Enjoy and as always feel free to comment

The beta if left unchecked on 1000 active desktops could be like the event logs table which can be massive. In the first full release we will be handling that by doing a cleanup during script runs to keep database at 30days only of data. We may look at letting admins adjust that in later releases so they control the number of days to hold retention.

We also provide a rescan button in plugin as well as a delete so if you do not schedule it but just use it as a 24 hour report you can scan only when you want to get last 24 hours.

We are looking at some charting soon to graph usage time lines, site visits and other metrics that may be useful.

Some neat stuff coming soon.

How bad does this increase the size of the LT database? That could be quite a bit of data.

I just couldn't wait so I went ahead and coded all that out and re-released version 1 as now out of beta.

Added to final release of 1.0

Manual scan operations

Manual Clear log

Data collector

Retention Policy

Client Enable / Disable Scans

So you question about database size is no longer an issue. You can set a retention policy per client between 1 and 90 days. so if you only want a weeks worth from client A the set them to 7 days but client B may only want 1 day or maybe 30 days so client B gets a different policy. You may have a client that wants to be excluded from scans all together just disable Surflog and even if client or system falls in to a group that scanner runs against it will not run on that system or client.

We are looking at doing some nice metrics where we can look at surfing patters at the client level to see web traffic flows, common sites between users, track where users surf the web (User A went to Machine A then Machine B then Machine Z surfing FaceBook), Peeks and valleys of web traffic from location to location and well it is just limitless..

Watch this plugin as it matures.. Will be a must have in everyone's LT tool box!

Hi Cubert,

for me it is not working, dont know why. First I imported everything, I have under scripts a Folder called "SurfLog", but nothin inside. In the root i found a script called "GRab Surf Logs". I enabled loggin in the Client Location. I run the script manually, takes about 10 mins. The script genreates two files, one csv and the SQL file. After that both files are deleted, but under Computer Screen, the surf log is empty. Did I do something wrong?

Greetings Oliver

Importing sometimes does that so move script into folder so you know where it belongs, next if you have enabled your client? then try a dry run by selecting rescan button from the console of the computer, monitor the scripts tab for the scans to show up there, once completed go back and see the data. If the data does not show then send me a screen shot of all the script logs the rescan produced.

rescan is just like running the script on a schedule, just forces the script to run again "NOW".

Bonus points and I know this will take time, but I'm glad to help in any way I can - Allow us to export a client facing report and categorize traffic..we just had to do this for a client and we used sysinternals tools, imported into excel, we created a sheet that categorized domains and used v-lookup, however, with LT I'm sure there are much better ways.

Great job! Just got this installed and tested on a site. Working great so far. I can't wait to see what the future holds...Export, Print, Report, and perhaps option to click on and follow link (hint, hint)...LOL.

Seriously, great job and thanks for the contribution.

Released version 1.0.2

Fixed up how the dates were being handled in conversions. This should improve the collection and reduce failures due to date formats being wrong during SQL insertions.

New Version released!

Everyone,

We just released 1.0.3 today!!

We fixed some major issues with Time that was causing all sorts of issues. Its in Beta so if you have any issues with the new script send me the format of the date column as it is seen in the CSV file.

Germany I have you covered in the new script.

Next we added a new feature that will highlight rows of data in Surflog based on Keywords. So if you want to see all Microsoft or all Porn just add those to the keywords list.

Yes but you should not get a error if no data exists,

I found the bug and squashed it. Uploaded a new zip and all is well. I would suggest getting the newest download

File date = 9/2/2014 4:20:32 - appropriately timed seeing the brain fart...

good question, sounds like a test is in order

I would imagine not since those types of modes are not supposed to record where you are going or keep any file of it. I would imagine the only way to do this would be to somehow record every DNS entry that the computer asks to go to.
